When a pattern calls for two balls 4 ounces each of acrylic or bulky, does that mean I knit with both? - acrylic slipper tub

I'm knitting a pair of shoes and the distribution of calls for 2 balls of acrylic yarn or small - I should have the two strands at once? Is it also depends on the thickness of the wool it is?
